Week 25 Round Up

Roundup Week 25

Divisional Cup action took centre stage in the CCFL at the weekend as teams battled it out to stay in the hat for the quarter final draws on Monday night.

In the Paddy Cotter Cup goals from Stef Znulchi and Brian O’Mahoney saw Arlington defeat Willow Park B in a first round contest, but Premier Division Melville United caused the surprise of the day when they travelled to Clara and knocked out the local Senior Division side also 2-1, Gary Stephens and Gary O’Connor getting the vital goals to send Melville into the quarter finals.

An extra time strike by Paul Lake was enough to see Shinrone through to the last eight as they put out Mullingar Town 1-0.

In the Division 1 Cup Abbeyleix are safely into the quarter final draw thanks to a comprehensive 6-1 win over Clonmore United. Stephen Hawkins, Chris Flynn and David Brennan all hit doubles as the Division 1 Sunday leaders eased through.

Raharney second team continued their good cup form when they put seven past Frankford in the Division 4 Cup. Damien Lynam, Brian Faughan, Kevin Smith, Kevin Flynn and James Murphy all got on the scoresheet for the impressive Raharney men.

St Carthages Athletic are also safely into the last eight following a penalty shootout victory over Stradbally Town. Packie Walsh fired in the goals for St Carthages before goalkeeper Aidan Keenehan brilliantly saved two spot kicks in the shootout.

There was also some league action on over the weekend.

In Division 3A, Killeigh Ramblers moved back to the top of the table thanks to a narrow victory over Daingean Town. Glen Rafferty scored early on for the victors, but they needed a late winner to secure the points. Mark Egan returning after a long injury layoff headed in the all important goal with five minutes remaining.

East End Celtic consolidated their position at the top of Division 4B as they easily accounted for Clonmore United B team. James Carty, Eddie Keenehan, JP O’Leary and Brian Killeary were on the mark for East End who have led the division from the outset and only a late surge from Frankford can deny them the title.

In the Under 17 Division Gracefield remain top following a 3-2 victory over Newbridge Town. Goals from Nigel Murphy, Mark Garry and Jim Hendy ensured that Gracefield remain the team to be caught in this very competitive division.
